The expansion of the European Union last year has conspicuously expanded the horizons of western European travellers as they plan their summer car travels. A couple of years ago, families from France, the British Isles or elsewhere in western Europe would have considered themselves adventurous if they so much as crossed the river Oder and entered Poland on their summer holiday. But the eastward enlargement of the European Union, plus the accession of many central and eastern European countries into the 'green card' reciprocal insurance scheme now encourages many more travellers to drive much further east.
