The Bulgarian town of Vidin is hardly a pretty spot. The old ramparts of the Baba Vida citadel line the riverside parks, but few visitors linger to see the mosque, the abandoned synagogue and the handful of handsome churches. Vidin is a place one passes through, more by accident than design, when travelling from western Bulgaria to neighbouring Romania.
