Airship Italia leaves Kings Bay for North Pole

Today’s the day! Under a clear Arctic sky, the airship Italia left Kings Bay at about four in the morning. The crew of seventeen (sixteen humans and Titina the dog) is optimistic. The cross blessed by Pope Pius XI during the team’s Vatican visit seven weeks early is on board, along with a spare radio, reserve supplies of fuel, pemmican and chocolate, maps, sextants and compasses.
