good writing from hidden europe

Okay, so we know that there are already magazines about far flung places aplenty. And even the regular newspapers deluge us with travel supplements that extol the merits of the latest hip ski resort, detail what's new in Caribbean chic, or encourage us to go llama trekking in the back of beyond. But hidden europe is different. We complement rather than compete with the tremendous range of first rate travel publications that cross our desks every day.

So where does hidden europe differ?

hidden europe is an English language bi-monthly that explores the cultural diversity of modern Europe. Since our launch early last year, we have developed a genuinely pan-European readership and carried — in our magazine and our regular e-newsletter - well over a hundred articles on life, people and places across the continent.

Why not search our site to see what we have to offer?

hidden europe publishes good writing that evokes the spirit of Europe's diverse landscapes, conjures up a sense of place and probes the curiosities of our continent's diverse cultures. It is, of course, also packed with accurate and up to date information. Above all we hope that hidden europe will inspire you to look beyond the usual tourist trails — or, perhaps, to stay at home, take out an atlas and enjoy our enthusiasm for the offbeat, the eclectic and the everyday that all make Europe so special.

Our brief is Europe wide, and we criss cross the continent to bring our readers the very best of what's new, what's old, what's odd and what's fun. Only occasionally high brow, and often low brow. Sometimes up market, sometimes down market. But what we do care about is Europe's engaging diversity. Just when you thought you knew Paris or Prague perfectly, up pops another angle. So a new perspective on well trodden paths, and a cool look at undiscovered corners. Crisp, clear, informed and sometimes calculated to make you smile. And always managing to make you think.

Of course we have a web site, but at hidden europe we believe there's still a place for print on paper. Computers have their place, and of course our subscribers also receive the hidden europe e-newsletter (if they wish). But even in this world of bits and bytes, surely there's no greater pleasure than good writing, well printed, that's delivered directly to your front door.

hidden europe comes from the very heart of Europe, from Berlin, and that's not chance. We live in a city that for half a century straddled a deeply divided Europe. For our gloss on the city where hidden europe is published, click here.

And us? Two women, who between them have travelled more miles around Europe than most. Two women who want to share their infectious enthusiasm for people and places. We are not tour operators, not travel agents, nor do we have any multinational backers. True, we've written before. Susi is an expert on issues to do with language and identity, and in another incarnation still weaves words about the mediaeval world. Nicky is a geographer who still finds nothing more engaging that a pile of old topographic maps and the Thomas Cook European railway timetable. Today we are both hidden europe.
